Phil's Dad

I could not think of a better way to spend the first day of Summer than a fishing trip…so off we went.  We had along for the ride 105 shad David caught yesterday afternoon.  We woke to a beautiful morning….until the clap of thunder in the distance.  We headed to the ramp to meet Phil and his Dad and we sat in the parking lot from 5:30AM-7:15AM watching a vicious thunderstorm beat the stuffing out of us.  We saw what was left of the sunrise.  We finally made it on the lake and to our first spot.  As is usually the case at this spot, it was a fish a cast til we ran out of bait.

We headed off to find more bait a few times throughout the day and boy did we find it ****(VIDEO)****

It has been very elusive lately, but no more.  We only had to make one throw at one point and we had about 1,000 in the net.  We dropped about 250 in the tank and off we went.

We arrived at spot #2 and found the fish feeding on top….we free lined the shad and the top water explosions were unreal………  When the bite got slower, we would throw a handful of bait in and it was on again.  We found the bass today pretty much in and around 12 feet of water.  They are mostly off shore now and it is only going to get better.  We stayed late and ended off riding into the sunset.  We saw two Bald Eagles and  a few other neat critters.  We ended the day with:

Approx. 40 catfish (4 species)
Approx 90 White Perch (Phil kept 40 to eat)
70 Bass (the only species we used the fish counter on)

I feel like we could have caught a lot more bass, but the other fish ate a lot of our baits and we had 2 storms to deal with (we dodged a late afternoon storm as well) so our actual stats were as follows:

We fished for 10 hours
Caught about 200 fish
Averaged about 20 fish per hour

The Summer fishing season is here!  It is time to get out and have the fishing trip of a lifetime.  Good luck if you go and get ready for a sore thumb.
